About Our Work
The PRS Research Lab is dedicated to advancing the frontiers of organic chemistry through innovative methodologies in sugar and amino acid synthesis. Our mission is to develop novel synthetic routes to complex molecules with significant biological and medicinal relevance, aiming to impact areas such as vaccine development and drug discovery.
We envision a future where our fundamental research contributes to the development of life-saving therapeutics and inspires the next generation of scientific leaders in chemical synthesis and chemical biology.
We have been working on developing novel synthetic methods in carbohydrate chemistry and have made significant contributions to this emerging area. An interesting glycosylation reaction using 1,2-cyclopropanecarboxylated sugars as glycosyl donors to produce 2-C-branched oligo-glyco-amino acids (OGAAs) was introduced for the first time in the field of carbohydrate research. These sugars were coined by us as hybrid sugars.
We recently developed stereoselective methodologies for the synthesis of C-spiro-glycosides, a class of spiro-sugars, and sugar-fused bicycles which are present in a number of bioactive natural products and pharmaceuticals already in the market. In addition, synthetic methods for bioactive natural products from commercially inexpensive sugar-based precursors were developed. New and convenient methodologies were also introduced for the synthesis of carbon-branched C-glycosides and imino-sugar analogues. Currently, we are focusing on the development of glyco-antigens as vaccine candidates for bacterial and viral diseases.
