SAFETY GUIDELINES
1. |
Safety glasses and overcoats must be worn by
all the research students (M. Sc, Ph. D. and R.A.) inside the laboratory. It
is suggested that research supervisors also adhere to these regulations (and
lead the students by example) while performing any experiment. |
2. |
Always plan your work so that
you work only when at least another person (research fellow or faculty) is
nearby. |
3. |
If you notice fire, fumes, etc., keep away
first and look for help. Handle such events only with proper protection
(safety glasses, face mask, shields, etc.). It is desirable to take help from
a colleague during such circumstances. |
4. |
Before starting any new experiment, details
must be discussed with the supervisor or someone (faculty or student) who has
some knowledge of such an experiment. |
5. |
All chemicals must be handled with utmost care
(common dangerous chemicals/solvents: Lithium, Sodium, Potassium, metal
hydrides, metal alkyls, boranes, peroxides, THF, bromine, strong acids and
alkalies, phenols). Do not do any
experiment in a hurry. |
6. |
Waste solvents (except water) should
not be dumped in the sink. Collect them as instructed in the
guidelines issued for this purpose. |
7. |
Always inform other colleagues of the
laboratory about what you are doing. Safety for your colleagues is as important
as it is to yourself. |
8. |
Avoid doing reactions in very large scale as
they are likely to become violent. It is safer to split such reactions to 3-4 experiments. |
9. |
Do not sleep in the laboratory. Eating also
may be avoided. |
10. |
Report any accident that happens in the
laboratory to the dean/supervisor. |
11 |
Read the Standard Operating Procedures (SOC)
for safety in chemistry laboratories. |
