In
an open-ended lab
course, students perform experiments as part of guided mini-projects.
The
problem might have been previously investigated, but the students - at
their
level of study - are not generally conversant with the findings.
Therefore, by
doing experiments they try to obtain chemical facts and draw inferences
much
the same way as the original investigators would have done. Further,
instead of
following detailed procedures given by the instructor, the students
play an
active role in designing the experiments and optimising the procedures.
